Naikan

Naikan, Japanese meaning introspection (Chinese内观 “Neiguan”) is a structured method of self-reflection and awareness developed by Yoshimoto Ishin (1916-1988) a business man and devout Jodo Shinshu Buddhist.  As Naikan was originally used by Jodo Shinshu monks as a means of self examination it was later refined for public usage.

Naikan practice is based on three questions:

  • What have I received from (person or situation x)?
  • What have I given to (person or situation x)?
  • What troubles and difficulties have I caused to (person or situation x)?

These questions are powerful questions we call strategic questions that do the following:

  • They release a particular energy helping us to tap into and synthesize information already known to us.

  • They further help us to own the new information.  It is not someone else’s answers or a directive from a therapist. Ownership is a powerful motivation for change.

  • These strategic questions also help release emotion often accompanying the answers to these questions and help release blockages to new ideas.

  • Finally energy for change is generated in the process a latent energy which lay hidden in the answers.

 Gratitude
Naikan also tills the soil for Gratitude to bloom in our life. Gratitude is an uplifting and powerful experience.  It is not the same as thankfulness.  Thankfulness is an intellectual, mind process.  I thank the person because I have received something from him. Gratitude on the other hand is a deep Awareness. It just is . . totally and completely.

What Naikan can do for you

Naikan is able to release emotional blockages that have stopped us from living  a joyous and fulfilling life.
